Summer Mountain Towns: Seven Cool Escapes for July and August
Seven mountain towns that come alive in summer with cool air, long evenings, and the kind of walks worth flying for.
When European cities top 35 C in August, mountain towns become the most pleasant places on the continent. The destinations below all combine cool temperatures, real hiking, swimmable lakes, and accommodation that doesn't require winter sports infrastructure to make sense.
Chamonix, France
Why: Mont Blanc at the doorstep, lift access to high-altitude trails, and a town that breathes when the snow leaves. Days are 22 C; nights drop to 12 C for sleeping with the window open.
Three easy day-walks: Aiguille du Midi to Plan de l'Aiguille, Lac Blanc loop, Grand Balcon Sud. Each rewards an early start.
The Dolomites, Italy
Why: pale-pink limestone, refugios with full meals, and trails that connect for days. Base in Ortisei (Val Gardena) or Cortina d'Ampezzo.
The Alta Via 1 is the famous multi-day route, but day hikes from Passo Pordoi and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo loop are spectacular without packs.
Banff, Canada
Why: turquoise lakes, accessible alpine trails, and consistent summer weather. Lake Louise is famous for a reason; arrive at sunrise to walk the shore alone.
The town is busy in July and August; consider Canmore as a quieter base 20 minutes away.
Hallstatt area, Austria
Why: lake swims with mountains, salt mine history, and a town that's beautiful enough to forgive the day-trippers. Stay in Bad Goisern, not Hallstatt itself, to escape the daytime crowds.
The Dachstein cable car opens to a glacier walk; the Hohenwerfen Castle is a worthwhile day trip.
Ushuaia, Argentina
Why: southern hemisphere winter is northern summer; in their summer (December to February) it's 14 C and brilliant. Tierra del Fuego National Park, glacier walks, and Beagle Channel boat trips.
Not a quick trip from the northern hemisphere; pair with Patagonia or Buenos Aires.
Sapa, Vietnam
Why: 20 C in northern Vietnam's mountains when Hanoi is sweltering. Terraced rice paddies, ethnic minority villages, and walks that don't require technical skill.
Stay at a small lodge outside town; the town center has become commercial.
Lake Bled, Slovenia
Why: small enough for a long weekend, mountains and a lake in one frame, swimmable in summer. Walk the lake loop in 90 minutes; row to the island.
Pair with Lake Bohinj 30 minutes away, quieter and equally beautiful.
Planning notes
- Mountain accommodation books up 4 to 6 months out for July and August.
- Hiking shoes, not trail runners; rocks are sharper than you remember.
- Sunscreen at altitude. The sun is stronger than it feels.
- Refugios and mountain huts require reservations and often cash.
