Where to See Autumn Foliage: Eight Destinations Worth the Trip
A short guide to eight reliably spectacular autumn destinations, with weeks to target and what to do once you're there.
Autumn travel rewards travelers who chase a narrow window. Most of the destinations below are spectacular for two to three weeks and ordinary on either side. Booking early and committing to a date is the trick; the leaves don't wait.
Kyoto, Japan
Peak: mid to late November. Maples turn red against temple gardens designed for exactly this view. Tofukuji and Eikando are the most famous; arrive before 09:00 to walk them quietly.
Stay in a small ryokan in the north of the city and walk the Philosopher's Path in the early morning. Reservations for the famous viewpoints fill months ahead.
Vermont, USA
Peak: late September to mid-October. The whole state turns at once. Drive Route 100 north from Killington for the most reliable color; stop in Stowe for a longer base.
Book accommodation by July. The weekend after Columbus Day is the busiest of the year.
Bavaria, Germany
Peak: mid to late October. Mountain forests turn yellow and copper, with snow already on the highest peaks. Base in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and take the cable car up the Zugspitze for the contrast.
Beer gardens stay open and most have heaters by then. Pair with a quiet weekend in Salzburg.
Scotland, Highlands
Peak: early to mid-October. The Cairngorms turn russet and gold across endless valleys. Drive from Pitlochry to Aviemore on the A9 with detours into Glen Lyon and Glen Affric.
Layer clothing seriously; days are short and weather changes within an hour.
Aspen, Colorado
Peak: late September. Aspens turn an absurd yellow across whole mountainsides. Maroon Bells is the famous shot; arrive by 06:30 for parking. Independence Pass is a remarkable drive when open.
The crowds are real but the views earn them. Stay in Aspen itself, not Snowmass, for the walks.
Tuscany, Italy
Peak: mid-October to early November. Vineyards turn deep red and gold around the same week as harvest. Base in Montepulciano or Pienza for the best combination of color, food, and quiet roads.
Pair with a Florence overnight at the end of the trip; the museums are calmer than in summer.
Quebec, Canada
Peak: late September to mid-October. The Charlevoix region north of Quebec City turns red, orange, and purple across the river valley. Drive Route 362 along the coast.
Stay in Baie-Saint-Paul, eat a long lunch with a window seat, repeat.
Korea, Naejangsan
Peak: late October to early November. Naejangsan National Park is Korea's most famous autumn destination, with maple-lined valleys and a cable car for the long view.
It can be very crowded on weekends; visit midweek if at all possible.
Planning notes
- Book lodging 3 to 6 months out for any of these.
- Build a buffer day for weather or color delays.
- Bring a real rain shell. Autumn is shoulder weather everywhere.
- Sunrise and an hour after are the photographic golden hours; the colors look different than at noon.
